“Recommend staying here instead of Thessaloniki for visit to Vergina and Pella”

This restored old house (some rooms have balconies overlooking the river) has free parking and is next to the synagogue in the colourful ancient Jewish quarter. You are walking distance to all major sites in the city, including the Byzantine Museum. There are several good restaurants nearby (we liked 12 Gradas), and Veria itself is an interesting place to explore. It’s known as Little Jerusalem for all the small churches (over 40), but it also has a Jewish and Muslim quarter. There are some lovely old buildings with balconies supported by timber beams. We drove from Thessaloniki to Pella, saw Pella in the morning (the museum is a must-see while the ruins are just okay) and then we spent the afternoon walking around Veria and seeing the Byzantine Museum and drove the next day to Vergina to see the tombs (12 km away). Vergina is small and doesn’t have much, so we are glad we stayed in Veria. It was a unique place in Greece.”
